Microsoft AI completes pre-training of MAI-Base-2
Microsoft AI has completed pre-training of MAI-Base-2, a mixture-of-experts foundation model with 80 billion active and 2.8 trillion total parameters. The company reports it beats every open-weight model it tested on held-out evaluations and is 4-12x more pre-training FLOPs-efficient than DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base. Microsoft says its training data is organic, not distilled from other models, and the model is now in post-training. At a Thursday town hall, CEO Mustafa Suleyman said it outperforms the base model behind GPT-5.6 Sol using one-quarter of OpenAI's compute. The figures are announced, not independently measured.
