Rubio Calls Drone Strikes Near Addis Ababa Terrorism, Warns on Ethiopia-Eritrea Border
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described internal armed groups fighting Ethiopian federal forces as separatist organizations and labeled recent drone strikes on infrastructure near Addis Ababa as terrorism. He said Washington recognizes Ethiopia's security challenges but warned that counter-responses must be calibrated, citing a military buildup along the Ethiopia-Eritrea border and the risk of a wider regional war. Two coalitions oppose this framing: the Ethiopian Peoples' Forces Alliance for Survival rejects it in an 18 October statement, and the coalition called "Lehilewina" confirms drone attacks in Addis Ababa and Bishoftu, calling them self-defense, not separatism.

Sodo Woreda Attacks Kill 11 Farmers as Residents Seek Federal Help
Armed groups have killed at least 11 farmers in Sodo Woreda, East Gurage Zone, within two weeks, residents say: six in Suten Kebele on September 29, 2026, and five in the Gefersa Giorgis and Joro border areas on October 10. East Gurage Zone Deputy Administrator Desu Abegaz attributes the attacks to OLF-Shene and says zonal authorities are coordinating joint security operations with Oromia and Central Ethiopia officials. Tikvah Ethiopia gives slightly different dates and quotes another deputy administrator's name, but the death toll matches. The figures are announced, not independently measured.

Ethiopian, Somaliland Ambassadors Clash Over Recognition and Al-Shabaab Risk
Ethiopia's ambassador to Israel, Tesfaye Yetayeh, told i24News that recognizing Somaliland would lead Mogadishu to demand the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from Somalia, strengthening Al-Shabaab. He said security concerns outweigh Ethiopia's need for maritime access. Somaliland's ambassador to Israel, Mohamed Hagi, rejected the claim on X, arguing recognition would bring Ethiopia strategic and security benefits and that Somaliland has blocked Al-Shabaab and piracy. Addis Standard's account of the Ethiopian ambassador's remarks adds that he said recognition could undermine regional counterterrorism efforts.
